ART AND CULTURE

For those who love art it will be pleasant to spend a few hours visiting the churches of Ostuni. The City has a rich church heritage , these are works desired by the faith of the people and by the patronage of noble families, made by local workers, decorated and embellished by artists, in many cases, unknown and who also
they left a tangible mark of their ingenuity. An art born in the province, far from the clamor of the great artistic circuits and which has looked at the dominant models and styles, reworking them in such forms as to achieve its own expressive identity. The gentle stone of which the territory is rich has offered the raw material to generations of imaginative and skilled stonecutters to decorate and make places of worship more solemn

Solemnly facing the town square or narrow among the white alleys of the ancient village, leaning against the houses with bell towers soaring among a myriad of chimneys, the churches of Ostini never present themselves as isolated monuments, located in separate spaces, but yes harmoniously fit into the urban fabric almost a

reaffirm the everyday life of the religious monument. An itinerary through the churches of Ostini will certainly not offer the grandiose grandiloquence spectacles of the great art centers, but it will certainly give the opportunity to get to know the aspects of what is unjustly defined as “minor art”.

Cathedral – The most important sacred building in Ostini and one of the best known in Puglia for its constructive singularities. Its construction dates back to the second half of the century. XV, during the episcopate of Bishop Nicola Arpone. The façade is of considerable artistic value, an admirable synthesis of “Romanesque, Gothic and Venetian” elements.
Divided into three bodies, it has three ogival portals, containing in the side lunettes the sculptures representing respectively S. Giovanni and S. Biagio; in the lunette of the main portal a bas-relief depicting the Bishop Nicola Arpone genuflected at the feet of the Virgin on the throne. The side portals are surmounted by two roses, while above the central one stands a splendid finely chiseled rose window. The plan is a basilica with three naves. The interior has undergone numerous changes over the centuries.

S. Vito Martire – Adjacent to the former convent of the Tonacelle, now home to the Museum of Preclassical Civilizations of the Southern Murgia. Built from 1750 to 1754, dedicated to S. Vito, the Church is one of the few examples of Baroque architecture in Ostuni. The façade, ending in the upper part with a large window and a pediment with contrasting lines, is marked on two levels by horizontal frames. It rises with elegance from the small square above the street level with a wealth of frames, niches, coats of arms, friezes. The interior is one
single nave and ends in the beautiful dome above the presbytery which on the outside is covered with multicolored majolica tiles. Today, the Tonacelle church, now closed to the worship of the faithful and intended as an auditorium, preserves its elegant beauty intact.

S. Francis – On the triangular Piazza della Libertà, next to the Palazzo di Città di Ostuni, a former Franciscan convent, stands the facade of the church of S. Francesco d’Assisi, built in 1780 in the area of a smaller church of the century. XVI. The current facade of the church dates back to 1884, it was designed by the architect. Gaetano Jurleo and
it results from a fusion of medieval, baroque and neoclassical elements. The same was subsequently enriched by two marble sculptures placed in the side niches depicting St. Francis and the Wolf and St. Anthony of Padua and, in 1985, by an artistic bronze door in whose panels the life of St. Francis is celebrated. The interior, with a single nave is presented in its eighteenth-century forms elegantly marked by columns, cornices, pilasters and enriched by seven altars. Note the polychrome marble altar of the Neapolitan school.

S. Giacomo in Compostella – It is located in Via Bixio Continelli, one of the most evocative of the Rione Terra. The church was built in 1423, on “April 10, the noble Pietro Cavallerio of Ostuni makes his testament

founding the chapel of S. Jacopo in Compostella ”The interior is simply harmonious. The facade is decorated with a lunette with fifteenth-century floral friezes. Inside you can see two capitals that were part of the arch of the apse.

The Church of the Holy Spirit – In a recess of the town square, the church of the Holy Spirit, one of the oldest in Ostuni built in 1637. Of particular artistic value is the Renaissance portal in whose lunette, carved in relief on local stone, is the Dormitio Mariae.

LOCAL FOOD

The cuisine of Ostuni is genuine and tasty, based above all on local agricultural products, the fine olive oil, fresh vegetables, tasty cheeses prepared by hand by the numerous dairies in the area. A simple, almost poor gastronomy, yet rich in flavors, smells, colors and extremely expressive of the sobriety of a people who in terms of food tastes have remained extraneous to the lure of consumerism. Farinaceous products occupy a prominent place on the Ostunesi table, starting with bread-cooked still in wood-fired ovens-and its derivatives: “grisella” and “puccia”, a focaccia of great simplicity but with all the flavor of a kitchen without deceit.

The orecchiette that the Ostunesi call “stacciodde” open the long story of homemade pasta, they are made of durum wheat semolina – like the “strascinate”, the “lajanedde”, the “cavatelli” – seasoned with sauce and cacioricotta or in tasty pairings with fresh seasonal vegetables. Taste of healthy genuineness even in the tasty main courses, the meat dishes choose the oldest cooking system in the history of food: tender kid is cooked on the steaming embers, exquisite tasty sausages “marretti” (lamb offal tightened in balls ).

There is no shortage of more elaborate preparations: rich vegetable flans, sumptuous timbales and parmigiane. For those who love seafood, the Adriatic fish-rich ensures dishes with superlative flavors: from appetizers based on seafood; to tasty fish soups, sea bream, sole, snapper and superfine scampi.
